A "Nightmare" debut for "Teen Spirit" director (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – A clear imagination has always come in accessible in Hollywood, though these days it's re-imaginations which are running wild.

For Samuel Bayer, who rose to celebrity directing the Nirvana video "Smells Like Teen Spirit," forgetful up the new "A Nightmare upon Elm Street" was the ticket to launching his feature directing career.

"Nightmare," opening Apr thirty by New Line/Warner Bros., stars Jackie Earle Haley, an Oscar nominee for his supporting purpose in "Little Children," as iconic slasher Freddy Krueger.

The purpose of Freddy was originated by Robert Englund, who starred in Wes Craven's 1984 original, five sequels as well as 41 episodes of the late '80s TV spin-off "Freddy's Nightmares."

"Everybody knows who Freddy Krueger is," Bayer explained. "To reinvent this stuff for the new generation is truly exciting."

Casting the right Freddy was essential for the new film to work. When Bayer came upon board in early 2009, the only actress he envisioned for the purpose was Haley. Bayer had dignified his work from 1976's "The Bad News Bears" by new hits like "Watchmen" as well as "Shutter Island."

"There was an audition fasten he'd made for 'Watchmen' which we got my hands on, which only blew my mind. That was unequivocally helpful in deciding which he was the right guy for the job."

In fact, he adds, Haley stole which movie: "He was the one character we unequivocally remembered as well as which we had empathy for."

It's remarkable, he said, how quickly "Nightmare" came together, deliberation he's "someone who has been locked in development hell for so most opposite projects in the las! t decade .

Fifty days of shooting began in late Apr 2009 in Chicago with the bill Bayer puts at about $30 million. He treated "Nightmare" like the most bigger film, observing, "We unequivocally approached the film really ambitiously -- whether it's the attempt work or the number of locations we went to or the sets we built."

So it was the tough shoot, though he says which wound up operative to the film's advantage.

"When we were shooting at 5 o'clock in the sunrise in an deserted bureau we'd been shooting in for dual weeks as well as nobody had slept as well as Jackie'd been wearing the makeup for eighteen hours, there was the lot of pain involved. And which pain, we think, translated upon the screen.

Was his credentials in song videos as well as commercials helpful in directing his initial feature?

"I feel like the virgin that's eventually had sex as well as we can eventually speak about it," he laughed.

"In song videos as well as commercials we have the very, really quick turnaround. From begin to finish, it competence be dual to 3 weeks, together with prep as well as post. This was the year of my life as well as nothing can quite prepare we for how most concentration it takes to see the plan all the approach through. It's the opposite mindset."
