"Back-up Plan" worked well for director Alan Poul (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – It never hurts to have the fall-back in front of when things don't go as expected, as good as for first-time film director Alan Poul "The Back-Up Plan" valid to be as great as its name.

Poul is no visitor to Hollywood, carrying produced cinema such as "Candyman" as good as radio shows from "My So-Called Life" in the mid-1990s to 2008's "Swingtown." Along the way, he earned Emmy nominations for gloomy drama "Six Feet Under."

But when it came to directing, he found Hollywood's doors sealed to him as good as believed he would have to raise income himself to make the low-budget, dim drama in the indie film arena.

Then, along came the producers of heartfelt, regretful humerous entertainment "Back-Up Plan," which debuts in theaters upon Friday starring Jennifer Lopez. They offered it to him as his initial feature film and, knowing which couple of second chances come around in Hollywood, Poul seized the moment as good as took the job.

"It's droll the approach hold up turns out," he told Reuters. "

"It's some-more formidable to crossover than we competence imagine, mostly since the TV world as good as the film world have been populated by different people," Poul said. "Often they appear similar to dual discreet universes with limited overlap between them."

Since the mid-1990s, TV stars have proven sincerely skilful during channel over into film, as good as vice-versa. Helen Hunt, for example, was still operative upon TV's "Mad About You" when she won an Oscar for best actress in 1997's "As Good as It Gets." But for others the change remains difficult.

COMEDY WITH AN EDGE

Poul found himself labeled as the producer of top-quality TV -- not the bad label! to have , he straightforwardly admits -- though he had prolonged preferred to direct the film. He pronounced "Back-Up Plan" appealed to him since beyond its appearance as the frothy, regretful comedy, he felt it had the sure "edge."

"It isn't heavy, though it stays in the genuine world," he said.

"The film is unequivocally romantic. we think it's emotional, though what we similar to about Kate (Angelo, the screenwriter), is which she's not afraid to go during the humor in the approach some people competence think is crude."

For instance, when women accumulate to talk secretly about childbirth, the descriptions can get personal, as good as Angelo was means to capture the humor in those moments, Poul said.

"The Back-Up Plan" stars Lopez as the single lady who feels she has waited as good prolonged for Mr. Right to come along, so she decides to have the baby upon her own.

Just as she finds out she is pregnant, along comes the male of her dreams in the form of actor Alex O'Loughlin, as good as their dual characters contingency determine if they have been right for any alternative as good as for raising the baby together.

"The ways in which Zoe (Lopez's character) has set up obstacles to her happiness struck me as genuine as good as honest as good as that's what got to me about the movie," Poul said.

Lopez, who earnings to cinema after roughly 3 years during which she gave bieing born to twins, echoes Poul's thinking, revelation Reuters she believed Angelo had the "modern voice for Zoe" as good as "the film was unequivocally droll as good as additionally touching."

Whether which combination leads to the career breakthrough for Poul as good as allows him to continue making movies depends, in large part, upon weekend box bureau results.

"The Back-Up Plan" faces! stiff c ompetition from new drive-in theatre "The Losers" as good as hold-overs such as "Kick-Ass" as good as humerous entertainment "Death during the Funeral." But as Poul good knows, in Hollywood, anything can happen.
